What a year this has been already and we’re only in March! In 2019 we have seen that the funds raised by ourselves, Breast Cancer Now and the European Union Seventh Framework Programme has contributed to a new breakthrough study. The research study was conducted by the University of Leicester and has been carried out at our Clinical Trials Facility.
We’re delighted to announce this study has suggested that changing the time a patient receives radiotherapy treatment for breast cancer could reduce its overall toxicity and potential side-effects. The side-effects you could potentially see in a patient include chronic pain and/or peeling of the skin, so doing whatever we can to help prevent these is crucial.
The research showed that the risk of developing side effects is greater in patients receiving radiotherapy in the morning as your body’s cells divide, making them more susceptible to damage from the X-rays.
It is recorded that around 30,000 people a year undergo radiotherapy treatment for breast cancer. We believe that the new research taking place at our Research Facility can be a starting point for personalised treatment for breast cancer, allowing maximum effectiveness whilst reducing side-effects and discomfort. More trials will have to take place to fully support the findings of this research.
Our Chief Executive, Nigel Rose has said: “It’s always a proud moment to see that Hope Against Cancer is playing a key role in funding the research to help find the latest cancer treatment.”
“This research is vital for developing breast cancer treatment. It motivates us so much to see how much of a difference our fundraising makes. We wouldn’t be able to fund this vital research if it wasn’t for the generosity and hard work of the public, community groups and organisations who donate to us.”
If you want to get involved in supporting vital research projects, you can help us by fundraising! Whether you choose to have a cake sale or run a marathon, any amount raised is greatly appreciated by the team at Hope Against Cancer.
