Thanks to the amazing supporters of HOPE, we are pleased to be able to fund another HOPE Researcher, Claire Smith. Claire will be joining as the HOPE Database and Tissue Banking Assistant. A tissue banking assistant will play the vital role of abstraction, management, analysis and reporting of relevant patient information (including patient outcomes) related to Cancer Research Biobank requests and other ethically approved cancer research projects.
Claire is currently working with Dr John Le Quesne and has developed specialist skills during her time with him, with experience in designing research databases using bespoke software in addition to processing archival material in the area of lung cancer. She is one of only a few non-NHS people trusted to have unrestricted access to pathology archive stores.
The Leicester Cancer Research Centre biobank is a very valuable resource which supports early career researchers right through to senior academics. Leicester Hospitals consider themselves privileged to receive samples from patients who wish to advance cancer research. Samples from patients cover a wide range of tumour types. Currently, they are banking for several projects across the following types; breast, lung, upper gastrointestinal, colorectal, melanoma and neuroendocrine. Claire’s role will be pivotal in supporting the biobank, particularly overseeing sample management.
Claire is a big fan of the outdoors and has completed a Macmillan “Mighty Hike” in 2018, walking over 26 miles in the Peak District to raise vital funds for cancer care. We are thrilled to welcome Claire and believe she will make a great ambassador for HOPE.
